"The play's the thing, and if Ophelos is indicative of the results we can expect, Taproot's group effort will shake things up in Charlotte and beyond, demonstrating unique ways of creating and presenting vital new plays and choreographies."
-Perry Tannenbaum, Creative Loafing

A young woman struggles against the destructive cycle of violence to save the man she loves from succumbing to a culture of vengeance.

Based on the Scandinavian folk tale of Amleth with text from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Ophelos was created over the course of 14 months and 5 phases of development by the members of TAPROOT.

Ophelos is an original performance piece told through movement, masques, music and shadow.

Initial phases of development were shown at Pecha Kucha Vol. 9 at the Mint Museum, and at informal showings in partnership with Triptych Collective. The premiere performance was July 27-28 and August 3-4, 2013 at Upstage in Charlotte, NC. Further developments created with Greensboro artists were shown at the Greensboro Fringe Festival in Greensboro, NC from January 17-25, 2013.

Recently, Ophelos toured Mecklenburg County throughout April 2014 with a community event April 27 in conjunction with Pearls for Creative Healing.
