Freda explores the lives and struggles of one girl as she searches for meaning, purpose and fulfillment in the face of opposition and heartache. Freda is an intimate and magical experience for adults and youth. Freda was developed through interactive storytimes with Charlotte students of various age, cultural and language backgrounds. Students created visual art and movements for characters in the story which served as source material in developing movement, set and costumes.
Freda offers a performance experience that blends music, theatre and dance and features visual art from UMAR artists. Located in the NoDa area, UMAR Arts is an arts studio for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. At the studio they explore all forms of art, from music and song writing to the horticultural and fine arts. Work from UMAR artists will be on display for sale in the space.
Freda was presented at Studio 1212, a nontraditional performance venue between Plaza Midwood and Uptown. Freda was produced in part through funding from the Arts and Science Council.
